Church Committees

Below is a description of each of the Committees of Session.  We invite all members to consider one of them as a place of service.  Committees meet the first or second week of the month.

Worship

For the Christian, all life is worship.  But on Sundays and other occasions, we bring ourselves consciously before God in praise and adoration; in need, in hope, and deep trust.  Here we find refreshment of spirit and renewal of self as a creature of God, and as servants of God together.  The Sacrament of Communion is celebrated 13 times a year.  The committee takes care of all supplies and enhancements to worship; plans special services; coordinates music, ushers, and guest preachers.

Christian Education

The aim is to provide meaningful opportunities for people of all ages as they participate in study, and as they seek to apply Biblical understanding to Christian living.  This is done through church school for all ages (including adults), Bible Study, summer Vacation Bible School for children, and church summer camp.  The committee coordinates church school and determines curriculum; coordinates youth ministry, teacher training, confirmation classes, and Vacation Bible School.

Mission

The church is called to announce and demonstrate the good news of God’s love in Jesus Christ, to work to alleviate human suffering in every form and in every place it may be found.  At present, more than 10% of the church budget is invested in such needs beyond the church doors.  A food offering is taken every Sunday and distributed as “Love Boxes” to those coming to the church in need.  In addition, the church takes a turn monthly with the Lompoc Community Kitchen’s Feed the Hungry program.  The committee educates and coordinates the congregation in community and church-wide mission.

Building and Grounds

The maintenance of the church is an on-going necessity if the church is to spend wisely and stand attractively.  The committee coordinates volunteer workers to supplement the part-time custodial work.  It also makes numerous improvements throughout the year.

Long Range Planning

This committee’s responsibilities include revision, and maintenance of the Seven Year Long Range Plan on an annual basis; arranging for revisions to the church architectural master plan; developing recommendations for church staff needs other than pastor; and preparing and maintaining a church staffing plan, in coordination with the Personnel Committee.

Fellowship

As a church ranging from children to youth; from families to retirees; from single-parent to widowed, we try to offer a supportive fellowship for all.  The Young at Heart group meets periodically with a variety of fellowship experiences for all ages.  Special potlucks are held on numerous occasions and include a Harvest Festival, mission speakers, Lenten suppers, talent shows, and summer picnics.  The committee coordinates and arranges for these.  It is charged with publicity and new member recruitment, classes and sponsors.

Stewardship

The grace of liberality is both biblical and fundamental in the Christian life.  The committee coordinates the annual commitment of tithes and gifts for such expression, and as a means of supporting the budget and program of the church, including time, talent and treasures.

Finance

The responsible determination of budget, planning, and distribution of the church’s funds comes under this committee’s oversight.
